National Science Week at Miranda

Children enjoying national science week at Story House Miranda

Story House Miranda has recently celebrated National Science Week. This is one of the children’s favourite events as they love to get involved in scientific discussions, hypothesising and experimenting through hands on, active learning. The educators in the room planned various types of experiments to engage the children’s sense of wonder and curiosity.

The educators planned developmentally appropriate experiences for each room that enabled the children to explore based on their learning needs and interests. This also promotes the children’s curiosity which builds upon their problem solving skills and other cognitive processes. The children were given their own individual materials, to ensure we maintained our Covid Health and Safety procedures, while also ensuring children’s continuity of learning. Some of the experiences the children engaged with involved melting ice cubes, exploring magnets as they connected them together and pulled them apart, painting with skittles, erupting volcanoes, exploding coke and mentos and so much more.

Science is an important aspect in children’s learning and development as it helps build on their understanding of the world around them. Science promotes children’s wonder and curiosity, prompting further hypothesising, investigation and experimentation. All these areas stimulate the children’s brain development as they seek to make sense of their world.
